The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, Cincinnati/Ohio
Fellowship Seminar: Präsentation von Ergebnissen der Arbeit mit Beständen der American Jewish Archives (Horace Kallen Papers, d.i. der Nachlass Horace Kallens)
The research project seeks to explore Kallen’s idea of Cultural Pluralism as one infused with religious content. In the 1950s, Kallen described the principle of cultivating difference as a civil religion endowed with a sacred canon of legal, philosophical, and literary texts that highlight nonconformist American Protestant intellectual traditions of the nineteenth century. Schmidt will discuss their significance in Kallen’s thought with reference to his writings and how so far understudied material in Kallen’s collection at the AJA can enlarge our understanding of his concept of pluralism and the contexts of its development.
